A tribute from a life-ling friend, Derek Soper

Created by Michael 3 years ago

Brian and I (Derek) were in and out of touch over about 77 years, but never really lost touch. Our Hersham fathers knew each other. As 11/10 year olds we first met on the train going from Walton-on-Thames to start at Surbiton Grammar School. Though not in the same form, due to the slight age difference, we did our GSEs and HSCs at the same time however.  We were both in the pioneering ‘Bio VIth’ Studying Botany and Zoology. We also coincided over two year at Reading University on different courses.

After that our paths very much diverged, through the services, and eventually into work.  It was no surprise to later learn that Brian, being brilliant at mathematics, had pursued a sterling career with British Airways designing computer programmes.

Fast forward to more recent times when by telephone Brian suggested reunion meetings of old ‘Uni’ friends and I said ‘go on’.  These overnight events were very enjoyable and ran annually, start in Reading in 1997, for many years.

From the early days as teenagers playing games etc. at our Walton House to nowadays, Brian it has been good to know you.  Rest in peace, dear friend.
